Revitalization Projects Transform Downtown Montrose into a Thriving Business Hub |
Montrose, Colorado, is experiencing a remarkable transformation as historic preservation projects breathe new life into the downtown area, attracting businesses and fostering economic growth.
The Rathbone Hotel, a boutique establishment, stands as a testament to this revitalization. After a meticulous two-year restoration of the 1909 Knights of Pythias building, the hotel opened its doors on July 3, 2024, offering 17 spacious rooms and the Parlor Bar, a coffee and cocktail venue. This project not only preserved a piece of Montrose's history but also set a precedent for future developments.
Following the success of The Rathbone, plans are underway to repurpose the original Montrose City Hall, built in 1926, into a boutique extended-stay hotel. This initiative, in partnership with Colorado Mesa University, aims to provide unique accommodations while serving as an educational training ground for hospitality students. The project underscores a commitment to preserving historic landmarks while meeting modern business needs.
In addition to these boutique ventures, larger hotel chains are recognizing Montrose's potential. A new Hampton Inn is set to break ground this summer at the Colorado Outdoors development, marking the second national-brand hotel in the area. This $18.9 million project is expected to generate significant local tax revenue and create numerous employment opportunities, further stimulating the local economy.
The city's dedication to historic preservation extends beyond hospitality. The Montrose United Methodist Church, a downtown fixture for over a century, began extensive renovation work in June 2024 to stabilize its foundation and restore its exterior masonry. Similarly, the century-old Montrose County Courthouse is undergoing a $14.8 million facelift to modernize its facilities while maintaining its historic facade.
These preservation efforts are complemented by strategic partnerships aimed at economic development. The Montrose City Council and Colorado Mesa University have established the Montrose Permanent Fund Endowment, investing proceeds from redevelopment projects into higher education and workforce training. This collaboration ensures that the benefits of revitalization are felt across the community.
As Montrose continues to honor its rich history through thoughtful preservation, the city is emerging as a vibrant business hub. The blend of historic charm and modern amenities is attracting entrepreneurs, tourists, and residents alike, positioning Montrose as a model for sustainable economic growth rooted in heritage. |
